【展示コンセプト】
≪ This exhibition will explore the ways in which dolls, in a variety of forms, have been used as vehicles for reinforcing and questioning the cultural and social roles men and women play in society. The definition of dolls in this context has been widened to include forms not ususlly associated with the traditional concept of the doll as a child's plaything. Mannequins, anatomical wax models, the ventriloquist dummy and 'love' dolls will feature prominently as either objects or images alongside examples of artists' and filmmaker's work that has relied heavily on the use of the dolls.

Fashion:
We are looking to challenge the idea that a mannequin is simply a figure used to display clothes and we will examine the various functions, forms and meanings of mannequins used in visual merchandising from early wax figures to the ultra-realism of modern mannequins. The erotic qualities of the mannequin, as an idealised female form, raises interesting questions about the associations between consumption and desire.

Science:
In the 18th and 19th century medical science was bound up with particular aspects of body image that concentrated on the physical differences between men and women and how this impacted on their social roles. Using images from the collection we will be looking at the heavily gendered nature of these models. We will also be looking at the use of dolls within other sciences such as life saving and the use of dolls in theraputic diagnostics.

Relationships:
It is widely acknowledged that children use dolls as objects of transference, interacting with them to work out their own social and personal identities. They become intimate companions and form part of a fantasy world where the child is the one with the power to prescribe behaviour and control the relationship. The perfect passive partner will never answer back. These substitute relationships are an acceptable part of a child's development and in this context have no power to shock. However, when the need for a substitute companion is carried on into adulthood it raises very different reactions. Through the legend of Pygmalion and Galatea the concept of the creation of the "perfect woman" will be explored and examples of this will be shown, using images of "Love" dolls and replica of Oskar Kokoschka's Alma Mahler doll.

Art:
In the 20th century a wide variety of artists working in different styles and contexts have used the doll as a metaphor and a means of exploring personal, sexual and social identity. In the 1930s German artist Hans Bellmer started making jointed dolls in the form of adolescent girls which he then arranged in erotic poses or as victims of violence and abuse. We are working towards acquiring it on loan for this exhibition. We are also hoping to acquire the work, or images of the work, of other artists who work or have worked with doll forms in a challenging way to manipulate and alter our sense of reality. ≫
